Peter Dutton says spending as much as $450 million on a referendum to give the government powers to deport criminal dual nationals would represent good value for money, suggesting the Constitution is too restrictive to keep the community safe.
The opposition leader and senior Coalition MPs are considering an election promise to hold a referendum on deportation powers, potentially handing the government the ability to cancel the citizenship of anyone found guilty of serious crimes such as terrorism offences. [ . . . ] Australian law already permits the deportation of a dual citizen when they have been sentenced to more than three years in prison for crimes including terrorism and treason – provided they are being removed for the safety of the community.
